2009 Grand Marshals Cole & Jean NelsonCole and Jean Nelson have lived in Darlington for more than fifty years. They have three sons, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jean worked as a nurse for Dr. Phillips in Darlington and helped take care of medical needs of three generations of families form the Darlington and Dublin communities. Cole was a Deputy with the Harford County Sheriff Office and retired as a Lieutenant. Cole and Jean are active members of the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Darlington. Years ago they worked with the youth group and would drive to Scarboro and bring the kids back to church for the youth events. Jean has for the past twenty years worked with senior citizens of the area through a group called the Gadabouts. Once a month they gather to go on a day trip or just meet for some fellowship. The group still meets today. The Dublin United Methodist Church has more people in the Gadabouts than any other church in the community. Jean also helps run the Twice Blessed Thrift Shop which is supported by the communities of Darlington and Dublin. When Cole was an active Deputy he would help both youth and adults in the Dublin/Darlington area to get them back on the right track and gain their trust and respect. Cole was very active in working with the youth in the area through sports. He directed and coached Little League for the Dublin/Darlington area for over twenty-five years. In those years he helped build the baseball diamonds in the area. Cole also helped coach baseball for the youth at Dublin Elementary School. Cole has been active in the Lions Club and Darlington Volunteer Fire Company for over fifty years. He is a past President and Chief of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company. Their lives have been busy helping people of the community and still are to this day. |
